Welcome
on the website of Modellbahnantriebe Glasmachers! Here you can find reasonable priced transmission conversion kits. With these kits you can improve the handling qualities of your locomotives dramatically. Usually the transmission ratio will be doubled, which will give you numerous advantages:
- The maximum speed is reduced by 30 to 50 % (due to the lower torque the engines will run at a slightly higher revolution).
- The shunting behavior is strongly improved, while the minimum speed is also reduced due to the changed transmission translation. Additionally the engine will have to apply less torque - many engines will start thereby with a lower minimum number of revolutions and this will result in an improved starting behavior.
- The speed of the locomotive is far less load-sensitive. This means that with the same speed selected on your transformer, the locomotive or train will not slow down or increase speed as much on uphill or downhill tracks in comparison with the horizontal tracks.
- The locomotive will run over critical spots of the track more easily and with lower speed since the flywheel effect is about doubled.
- Conventional lighting with lightbulbs will be visible at lower speeds.
- The locomotive reacts substantially less sensitive to voltage differences, which in particular can occur at not soldered rail joints.
- At lifelike speeds the model will run more smoothly. Due to physical reasons the N-scale models can adjust their movement condition (speed) 160 times as fast as the original 1:1 model (H0-scale models 87 times). Therefore only it is possible to bring them to a dead stop in such a short distance. Above all however due to their nervous reaction to interruptions in the electrical circuit their model-fair impression is rather poor. This behaviour can be improved by increasing the amount of kinetic energy stored in the loco. This can be achieved either by installing a (larger) flywheel which is complex and expensive. The other possibility is to change the transmission (gear ratio). By doubling the gear ratio the kinetic energy stored in the loco at any certain speed is about quadrupled. The increased amount of kinetic energy will improve the driving qualities of the loco significantly.
In the context of this 2:1 gear ratio or transmission change only the worm of the worm gear system is replaced - all other gear wheels remain unchanged. Usually the existing single-thread worm is replaced by a half-thread worm, as can be seen in the picture below. Some locomotives are in series equipped with a double-thread worm - then the transmission conversion kit contains a single-thread worm.
Example of a half-thread worm in a BR 70 | Discover the joy of lifelike speeds of your models. Your modeltrain layout suddenly will look larger and work much more realistically! In order to get a feeling about the speed your trains are travelling throught the model layout, you only need a stopwatch, tape measure and a calculator. Mark for instance 1 meter of track on your layout. Note the time the model locomotive takes to travel throught the marked track from start to finish. The formula to calculate the actual speed of the model is: |
Example:
Track length 70 cm = 0,70 m.
Scale N = 1:160
Time required from start to finish 2.37 seconds.
The loco runs at 3,6 x 160 x 0,70 : 2,37 = 403,2 : 2,37 = 170 km/h.
